Myths & Truths

MYTH: “Infertility is a rare issue, and if we
have trouble conceiving it’s probably the
woman’s fault.”

TRUTH:
Infertility is more common than many people
realize, and it’s not just a women’s issue.
It is typically defined as the inability
to conceive after 12 months of regular, unprotected
intercourse (or 6 months if the
woman is over 35). Male issues contribute
to infertility in about 40–50% of cases.

MYTH: “If we’re healthy, young, and doing
everything right, pregnancy will happen immediately.”

TRUTH:
Even for young, healthy couples, conception
can take time. In any given cycle, the
chance is only about 20–25%. About 80%
of couples will conceive within 6 months
and roughly 85–90% within one year.

MYTH: “You need to just keep trying for a
long time before seeking any fertility advice
or evaluation.”

TRUTH:
While many couples conceive within a year,
earlier consultation is recommended in
some situations. Women over 35 should
consider evaluation after 6 months, and
anyone with concerns can seek guidance
sooner.

MYTH: “A woman’s age doesn’t matter until
she’s in her 40s – fertility won’t decline
much before then.”

TRUTH:
A woman’s fertility starts to decline in her
early 30s and more significantly after 35.
By age 40, chances of conception drop
sharply and miscarriage risk increases.

MYTH: “Men don’t have a biological clock
male fertility stays the same no matter how
old the man is.”

TRUTH:
Men continue producing sperm for life, but
quality declines with age. After age 40, motility and DNA quality often decrease, affecting embryo viability and IVF success
rates.
